Treat Yourself: Fat Girl Bakery
I’ve never really tested the old adage “never trust a skinny chef”. That said, there is something terribly appealing about an operation called The Fat Girl Bakery. Especially since the term “fat” itself can be uncomfortable. Usually, it is replaced by some sort of euphemism, such as “substantial” or “solid”. And while you usually can’t call another person “fat”, this is perfectly normal in a self-reference, such as “I’m fat”.
And so the whole concept of The Fat Girl Bakery has been a bit of a recent obsession.
The bakery is located in a mall in the Polaris area… but it’s at the back of the mall. First-time visitors should watch for a small roadside sign to find their way to the bakery, behind the other businesses. And while the notion of a side business suggests a level of informality, Fat Girl is as apt as it gets: a classic, polished bakery with display cases filled with deliciously laid out cupcakes, cookies at the bar, scones and all the rest. carbohydrates. -y things you might need.
For example, the Buckeye Brownie is a popular choice. The frosting is swirled as thick as the brownie itself, and that’s a good thing, a really good thing. Too often, local farms produce frosting that looks good, but tastes like whipped vegetable oil. It’s disgusting. Fat Girl makes the frosting well with a light and sweet peanut butter infused candy that tops a perfectly dense brownie with a hand dipped buckeye.
While not as popular as the fancy brownie, don’t sleep on the cinnamon buns. Soft, chewy bread surrounds the deep folds with a savory, classic filling. It’s topped with a generous frosting, this time tinged with a touch of cinnamon to match the filling. There is enough icing at the base to offer the possibility of dipping the inside of the roll. We’re talking frosting for every bite. It’s a thoughtful culinary victory in itself.
Really, more exploration is in order. You will find it at 1347 Cameron Ave.
