Proposal to waive intellectual property rights for Covid vaccines and drugs seems unlikely
A The World Trade Organization‘s controversial proposal to temporarily waive intellectual property rights and provide better access to Covid-19 medical products seems unlikely to pass, according to people following the latest round of meetings of the global agency.
Despite a year-long debate, disagreement persists over the fundamental question of whether a waiver is appropriate and the most effective way to tackle the inequitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines and treatments, according to a Geneva-based business manager , in Switzerland, where talks are underway. The WTO needs the consensus of all its 164 members for the proposal to pass.
