Pokmon Go Gym Trainer counters, weaknesses and locations • Eurogamer.net

Pokemon Go Gym Trainers are an addition introduced for the one-day Go Tour Johto event.
Each trainer’s team is themed around one of the Gyms in the Johto region, and because of this, their Pokémon all share a primary type – flying, bug, normal, ghost, fight, steel, ice Where dragon.
Finding and battling these trainers will help you complete the Go Tour: Johto Battle Challenge – a timed research quest only available on Saturday, February 26.
This research quest, as well as Go Gym trainer locationsare available to anyone wishing to participate in Go Tour: Johto, whether you have brought a ticket or not.

Where are the Go Gym Trainer locations in Pokémon Go?
Gym Trainers are trainers that you can battle for the duration of the Go Tour Johto event.
To find the Go Gym Trainer locations, you need to visit the shaky PokéStops. These PokéStops look different from regular PokéStops, with the cube at the top moving erratically.
Unlike the Go Rocket PokéStops – which share the same twitch behavior – these don’t have a darker appearance, making them a little harder to spot from a distance, so be sure to watch out for the telltale movement .
Unfortunately, the spawn rate of Gym Trainers is very low. Even if you have multiple PokéStops around you, it’s still a rare chance to see one appear.
Fingers crossed Niantic will react and increase this before the event is over – but has yet to comment on whether things will change. Until then, the only thing you can do is keep the stops in your sights and hope they appear. For those with tickets, we highly recommend focusing on the other time-limited tasks first, especially those that add to your Collection Challenge medal progress.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer weaknesses at a glance
Since Go Gym trainers focus on specific Pokemon types, planning your counters for these trainers in Pokemon is pretty straightforward. Instead of creating a complex team, you can focus on choosing Pokémon that all share the type which has the greatest advantage over the Pokemon you’re battling.
That said, some Go Gym trainers may have dual-type Pokémon, which makes them slightly harder to defeat – but those Pokémon will still be weak to the same types as other team members. Heracross, for example, is a Bug and Fighting-type Pokémon, but like all Bug-types, it’s still weak to land attacks.
To help you plan your counter, we’ve listed the type each Go Gym Trainer has been assigned to, as well as the main weaknesses of that type:
Coach | Type | Weaknesses |
---|---|---|
Robbenprinz | Flying | Electric, Ice, and Rock types |
Alehouou | Bug | Fire, flying, and rock types |
Leon9715 | Normal | types of fighting |
Brissete | Phantom | Dark and ghost types |
Terrururu | fight | Fairy, flying, and psychic types |
bathazar pokemon | Steel | Fighting, Fire, and Ground Types |
AbsolFée | Ice | Fighting, Fire, Rock, and Steel types |
MajinSage | Dragon | Dragon, fairy and ice types |

Pokemon Go Gym Trainer Flying Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Flying is weak against Electric, Ice, and Rock types.
Our best Go Gym Flying counters are Raikou – if you have one! – otherwise, the other electrics Electivire and Ampharos work like more common electric types you might have. On the ice side, Mamoswine is a great choice, while Tyranitar and Rampardos are great rock choices.

Pokemon Go Gym Trainer Bug Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Bug is weak against Fire, Flying, and Rock types.
Our best Go Gym Bug counters are Fire-types – such as Darmanitan, Arcanine, and Charizard, or Legendaries such as Moltres or Entei if you have them. That should do you good here, as it’s harder to find solid flight recommendations, and if you want a rock pick, we’ll offer the trusty Tyranitar.

Pokemon Go Gym Trainer Normal Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Normal is weak against Fighting types.
This limits our options, but the good news is that there are many great combat types out there. So our Go Gym Normal counters are Lucario, Conkeldurr, Machamp, Hariyama – or even Heracross if you caught one during the event.

Pokemon Go Gym Trainer Ghost Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Ghost is weak against Dark and Ghost types.
Our best Go Gym Ghost counter is Tyranitar, which, as you might have guessed from our other counters, is a great Pokemon to rely on. On the Ghost side, Giratina is the best you can get – although Gengar is easier to find and will more than do the job here.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Battle Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Combat is weak against Fairies, Flyers, and Psychics.
Our best Go Gym Fighting counters are those Fairy types – specifically Togekiss and Gardevoir – but on the Psychic side, a Mewtwo will easily clear out any opposition in your path.

Pokemon Go Gym Trainer Steel Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Steel is weak against Fighting, Fire, and Ground types.
Our best Go Gym Steel counters are fighting Pokemon, which literally pack a punch – so we’re looking at Lucario, Conkeldurr, Machamp or Hariyama.
Flying-types often don’t have the best offensive options, so if you want an alternative in combat, then Goudon, Garchomp, and Rhyperior are worth looking into on the ground side.

Pokemon Go Gym Trainer Ice Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Ice is weak against Fighting, Fire, and Steel types.
Our best Go Gym Ice counters are again fighting types – Lucario, Conkeldurr, Machamp, or Hariyama – but if you wanted to put the heat on this trainer, then Fire Pokémon Darmanitan, Arcanine, and Charizard are worth bringing along.

The Go Tour Johto event is here! After your choice of Gold or Silver, you can complete the Find Johto quest. Elsewhere, you must use a Charged TM and fight Gym Trainers for the Battle Challenge research. Beyond that, there’s an Evolution Collection challenge to complete, as well as the task of how to get Raikou, Entei, and Suicune in Photo Safari. Elsewhere, the Heritage Season continues into 2022, with the month-long Catch Challenge and a refreshed Go Battle League.
Pokemon Go Gym Trainer Dragon Counters
The Go Gym Trainer: Dragon is weak against dragon, fire, and ice types.
Our best Go Gym Dragon counters are the Mamoswine, Weavile, and Eevee evolution Glaceon ice types.
Otherwise – if you want to pit dragon against dragon then Dragonite, Garchomp and Rayquaza are recommended.

Good luck completing the Go Tour: Johto Battle Challenge!
