Midnight Ballerina tips the scales at Gulfstream
Thursday Gulfstream Park Race 8 is an optional, claimable event for fillies and mares racing seven furlongs on the main track (start time 4:11 p.m. EST).
The No. 9 Midnight Ballerina (6-1) posted the top speed rating last race in a local second-place finish at a mile on Jan. 7. Jose Ortiz wins races with Bill Mott and she is a logical competitor if she is able to race two. . Types pressed early from the outside posts work well at this extended sprint distance.
The No. 8 Pass the Champagne (8-5) nearly stunned Malathaat in the Ashland (G1) last year, and was sidelined after finishing deep behind in the Kentucky Oaks (G1). She graduated at this course and distance last winter and plans to walk outside under Luis Saez. It can be a tricky distance for returnees, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she ran well at low odds.
No. 10 Psychic Ability (6-1) finished second as a six-panel battered favorite and it was her first start in more than seven months. She has every right to move on.
No. 9 to win
