MGK Shuts Down TikToker Who Claimed He Didn’t Play Guitar Live
Machine Gun Kelly’s guitar playing was called into question last week on TikTok when a video went viral of a Guitar Center employee dissecting his guitar playing and claiming that a kill switch on his guitar was seen on several photos suggested he was playing live without the instrument’s volume turned on. After the video was released on the social media site, the musician shot his own TikTok in which he shut down the theory, explaining where that idea went wrong.
The music video, titled “Machine Gun Kelly EXPOSED”, began with Gunnar Dugrey sharing with viewers that after receiving Machine Gun Kelly’s new signature Schecter guitar at his store, he first noticed the kill switch. “It’s got a pretty neat feature, it’s called a kill switch. If you put it in the down position, it mutes all the volume, making it completely silent,” Gunnar said, then added, “That m made me wonder, how MGK use it in their live performances.”
Dugrey then shows various shots of Kelly playing with the kill switch in the down position, adding, “It certainly looks like he’s not using it for anything other than muting his guitar while he plays.”
But after the video circulated more than four million times, one of the people viewing it was MGK himself, who then dissected what was wrong with the hypothesis. Sharing a duet video, Kelly chimed in on each point, then explained, “Wait, you reverse-engineered it to go like this, because when it breaks, it’s on. I don’t only play my guitar live. You should go watch a performance, you can clearly hear it live.”
The musician also mocked him, “You’re wearing a Liquid Death hat. I’m also part owner of this company, so you’re promoting me while hating me.”

After MGK’s TikTok response aired, Dugrey posted his own video apology to the musician. “I was wrong and I’m happy to admit it. It was the first guitar I had seen that had a kill switch like this and it was actually off in the down position and on in the up position when it came out of the box but i didn’t realize you could apparently spin this thing.Usually toggle switches like this are used for pickups and you have to rewire it for direction change. It doesn’t there’s no rotation for something like that, so I just did ‘I don’t think about that and it’s up to me,’ he explained.
He also admitted that if he had done more research, he would have seen that the video from which one of the photos was taken clearly showed MGK performing live. He also added that he only had 200 subscribers and didn’t think his video would explode like it did or be considered a serious hit, but he issued an official apology to the musician.
