The United Nations Statistical Commission was established in 1947. But the Commission did not adopt the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics until 1994.

Every five years, World Statistics Day is celebrated on October 20. The day is celebrated to mark the importance of statistics in human life. The day aims to publicize the achievements of official statistics based on the values ​​of service, professionalism and integrity.

World Statistics Day is organized under the auspices of the United Nations Statistical Commission every five years. The global campaign is coordinated by the Statistics Division of the United Nations Department of Economic Affairs (UNSD). The United Nations will observe the next World Statistics Day on October 20, 2025, in keeping with its tradition of marking the day every five years.

Story:

The United Nations Statistical Commission was established in 1947. But the Commission did not adopt the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics until 1994.

The decision to observe World Statistics Day was taken at the 41st session of the United Nations Statistical Commission in February 2010. The first World Statistics Day was celebrated on October 20, 2010, with the theme ” Celebrate the many achievements of official statistics ”. The day was celebrated in honor of the continuous flow of information that the UNSD provides to people around the world to ensure good governance, transparency and accountability.

In 2015, the day was once again marked, with the theme “Better data, better lives”. In 2015, it was also decided to mark the occasion every five years.

In 2020, the theme for the third World Statistics Day was “Connecting the world with reliable data”. The theme aimed to reflect the importance of authoritative data, trust, innovation and the public good in nations’ statistical systems.

Importance:

Statistics are extremely important for university research as well as for the development of civil society and businesses. Statistics are essential for the social and economic development of any country.
World Statistics Day celebrates the process of collecting, analyzing and interpreting huge amounts of big data to help improve society. Countries come together on this day to collaborate on statistical management and put more effort into the process of collecting statistics.
