Daryl Dike on loan at Barnsley
Daryl Dike’s appearance last night for the United States Men’s National Team allowed for a surprise move. Earlier, City of Orlando announced the 20-year-old striker will head to the EFL Barnsley FC Championship team on a short-term loan with a conditional recall right. According to Julia Poe of the Orlando Sentinel, the deal includes an option for Barnsley to convert the loan to a permanent transfer, with a price tag of $ 20 million for 80% of Dike’s rights.
“Daryl has had a great rookie season with us here in Orlando, a season that has helped lead our club to the playoffs and on a personal level has been recognized with several calls to the US Men’s National Team.” Orlando City EVP of Soccer Operations Luiz Muzzi said in a statement released by the team. “We believe this opportunity with Barnsley will represent another step in his career, not only to develop in a new football environment, but to challenge himself in a new country and we are delighted that he brings those learnings back to us here at Orlando.. “
Daryl Dike was a 5th pick by Orlando in the 2020 MLS Superdraft of the Virginia Horsemen. He was a finalist this season for MLS Young Player of the Year, finishing with 8 goals and 4 assists this season.
Because Dike played last night in USMNT’s 7-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago, he qualified for a work permit to play in the UK for 3 years.
Huge work from Gregg Berhalter and his team to recognize this and put Dike in a position where this loan could happen. Dike is testing himself in England after a formidable rookie season for Orlando City.
